Events in Togo marking 50 years of the EU

In Togo on 23-25 March 2007, celebrations were held to mark the 50th anniversary of the EU's founding treaty. Under the theme "Fraternity beyond the EU's borders", they featured a debate, photo exhibition, gala reception and sports events.

The debate – "EU development and relations with outside countries" – took place in the German cultural centre, the Goethe Institute. Speakers from many different backgrounds contributed to a fascinating debate on the European experience and relations between an integrating Europe and developing countries. The same venue also staged a photo exhibition from 23 March to 5 April, after which it moved to the offices of the EU's mission to Togo (until the end of the year).

The reception on 24 March was attended by foreign diplomatic personnel as well as several personalities from the Togo government. In his speech taking stock of 50 years of European integration, the head of the EU mission praised the courage of the Togo political classes for returning to the path of dialogue and national harmony.

The celebrations were rounded off on 25 March with sports events involving Europeans and Togolese, including ambassadors from EU countries, government officials and Togolese sports stars.
