European diplomats will be visiting Tokyo’s schools to share the story of their country in Europe with children of all ages

On 9 May 2007 (Europe day) the ambassadors of the EU countries and many diplomats from their embassies will be visiting Japanese senior and junior schools in the Tokyo Metropolitan area to give a short presentation about the 50 years of European integration and about their country and its membership of the EU. In all, almost fifty diplomats and as many schools are expected to participate in the project.

Before visiting the schools, the ambassadors and diplomats will hold a joint press conference on the morning of 9 May, in which the Japanese minister for education Mr Ibuki is invited to take part.

50-100 students will attend the presentation at each school. The EU Commission will prepare a single slideshow on the EU and its anniversary for all diplomats and distribute several publications about the EU in Japanese. Interpreters will be provided by the embassies.

Some diplomats will also take the presentation to schools in other regions of Japan. In all, some 7 500 school children will be able to attend the presentations.
