To mark the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome, the Commission delegation has organized a number of events from 31 January to 10 February, in cooperation with the French embassy, the centre des sciences humaines, the Jean Monnet for Europe foundation, Lausanne, the pavillon de France, Auroville and the Indian council for cultural relations in New Delhi.
The programme is as follows:
- an exhibition providing a glimpse into the extraordinary life and achievements of Jean Monnet, a pioneer in his field – inaugurated on 31 January 2007 by the head of Delegation, Francisco da Câmara Gomes, together with the director-general of the Indian council of cultural relations, Mr. Pavan Varma, and the German ambassador, Mr. Bernd Mutzelburg. The exhibition highlights the main aspects of the European Union, and looks at experiences in Asia, for instance the South Asian association for regional cooperation (SAARC) and the association of Southeast Asian nations (ASEAN).
- a lecture by the president of the Indian council for cultural relations, Dr. Karan Singh (Auditorium 1 – India International Center, 1 February at 18:30]), on India and the ideal of human unity, and
- a day long seminar/round table at the India International Centre on Friday, 2 February 2007 from 10 am to 6 pm on the contribution and vision of Jean Monnet, Monnet and the construction of Europe, regional groupings such as SAARC, ASEAN, a comparison between the EU and Asian regional groups, and the relevance to Asia of Monnet’s approach.
