On the eve of the EU's 50th birthday, 250 000 readers of the Russian daily Izvestia will be offered a tour of the EU in an 8-page colour supplement, carrying articles and interviews on all aspects of the EU, including its history and current social, political and economic situation.
Prepared at the initiative of the German presidency with support from the European Commission’s Delegation in Russia, the supplement will include an article by Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner about key milestones in the EU's 50-year history and an interview with German ambassador, Dr Schmid, explaining the activities of the German presidency in the first half of 2007.
On March 23-25, the Russian Academy of Sciences is holding an international conference entitled "Russia and the European Union: past and present". Using new archive material, leading academics from Russia, the EU and Ukraine will look at how the USSR viewed the emerging European Communities. Staged with the support of the EC commission and the German presidency, the conference will end with a live link to the 50th birthday celebrations in Berlin.
