Tea with Robert Schuman essay contest

An essay competition for secondary school students asks them to imagine a tea party held by Robert Schuman, one of the founding fathers of the European Union. The prize is a trip to Brussels in April.

This competition asks students to creatively discuss the EU’s past, present and future.

Schuman’s guests at the tea party include Napoleon, Maggie Thatcher, Mussolini and Bono. Students have 1,500 words to write a dialogue in English or Irish based on this scenario. There are two categories – one for first, second and third years and the other for fourth, fifth and sixth years. Each of the eight Europe Direct centres around Ireland will choose a winner in each category.

The deadline for submission of entries is by Friday 9th February 2007 and winners will be announced by Friday 2nd March 2007.
