London Festival of Europe

A two-week series of high-profile public lectures, discussions and art-exhibitions to allow public engagement in debate of the many European questions of politics, art, philosophy and society.

The festival sees as a series of public lectures and discussions, many of which will be free of charge. Contemporary Romanian video art will also be shown during the festival. Speakers come from across the continent, and from other continents.

The festival is an endeavour to show how wide-ranging the European questions of value are, and will become an annual event.

Brief Program of debates and lectures:

 Monday 19th : Zygmunt Bauman lectures on ‘Making the Planet Hospitable to Europe’. To be followed by a public reception.

Tuesday 20th : Contemporary Eastern European Art, with Sarah Wilson, amongst others.

Wednesday 21st : The British media and Europe

Thursday 22nd : European Social Models

Friday 23rd : Europe and the Environment

Saturday 24th : Chinese and European art, with Hans Ulrich Obrist and Simon Groom, amongst others.

Sunday 25th : Keynote debate to mark the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome. ‘European values and borders’, with Kirsty Hughes and Kalypso Nicolaidis, amongst others. To be followed by a public reception.

Monday 26th : Peter Weibel on art and the nation

Tuesday 27th : A European notion of ‘Hospitality’?, with Gianni Vattimo and others.

Wednesday 28th : The importance of Multilingualism, with Gianni Vattimo and others.

Thursday 29th : European and Chinese notion of personal identity, with Ci Jiwei and Nicholas Bunnin.
