Concerts, festivals, debates, exhibitions, sports events and much more brought people from all over Europe together on 24 and 25 March to celebrate the EU's 50th birthday.
In spite of the cold Brussels evening, 60 000 people showed up on Saturday night to enjoy the open-air concert “ Stars of Europe”. Under the Atomium, a unique Brussels landmark, famous pop stars gathered to perform hit songs of past and present.
In Rome, events included a special meeting of the Committee of the Regions, at which it presented a declaration on its vision for the future of Europe. On Saturday, universities opened their doors to the public for a night of cultural activities .
Also on Saturday, 35 Berlin night clubs threw open their doors to EU musicians, and museums stayed open until 2 a.m. A sunny Sunday saw 500 000 people visiting 78 EU information stands at the BrandenburgGate and enjoying performances by street artists and international bands.
Students from all over Europe met in Madrid to enjoy concerts and artists’ performances and to build a giant puzzle representing the 27 EU countries, while Barcelona’s amazing Agbar tower was lit up with a huge “50 EU” sign.
On 17 March, 74 500 rugby fans celebrated the anniversary with a special ceremony at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium during the Wales v England RBS Six Nations match.
