International parliamentary celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Rome Treaties

The President of the Senate, Mr Franco Marini, and the President of the Chamber of Deputies, Mr Fausto Bertinotti, have invited their counterparts - the Presidents of the Parliaments of the EU countries, of the European Parliament and of the Parliaments of the candidate countries - to take part in a series of events to be held in Florence and Rome on 22nd and 23rd March 2007, respectively.

The initiative is aimed at involving the EU Parliaments in a common debate on the possible ways of advancing the European integration process. The initiative - which will be preceded on 21st March by a welcome concert organised by the Florence city council in the Municipal theatre - will consist of:

  • a seminar - "What is Europe lacking?" - to be held on 22nd March at the European University Institute in Florence. The seminar will be divided into three sessions:  political, economic and social.
  • a celebration ceremony - "A Political Europe and its Role in the World"- which will take place in Rome, in the Plenary Hall of the Senate, on 23rd March with the participation of distinguished European personalities.

At the end of the ceremony all the participants will be received by the Italian President of the Republic at the Quirinale, where they will have the opportunity to visit the Exhibition of European masterpieces and attend its official opening.
