Rom firar med astronauter, konst och debatter om morgondagens EU.

On 25 March 1957, the leaders of six European countries met to sign a historical agreement that formed the basis of modern Europe. Fiftyyears on, people from all over Europe will be celebrating this milestone in Rome, the city that witnessed the birth of the EU.

The keynote event will be a Youth summit, a two-day debate bringing together young people from all over Europe. In parallel, the city's most famous landmarks will play host to a series of conferences, debates and other events involving NGOs, local authorities, political figures and the general public.

The Palazzo Senatorio, whichhouses the mayor of Rome's office, will be the venue for the conference “50 years of Europe: Europe year zero?”. The EU's platform for regional interests, the Committee of the Regions, will be sitting in a special session at the prestigious Auditorium Conciliazione. And a number of major European masterpieces, including ‘The Thinker’ by Rodin and Tiziano's “Portrait of a man”, will be on show at the Italian president's residence, the Quirinale.

In perhaps the most original event, students and researchers at the prestigious La Sapienza university will have a chance todebate the EU's space programme with a number of European astronauts, while other universities will open their doors to the public for the “Equinox of knowledge”. This all‑night event will be closed by a series of sporting competitions in the unique Stadio dei Marmi, involving athletes from universities across Europe.
